Baker Investiture June 20, 2008

On June 20 at 2:30 p.m., Governor Chet Culver will administer the oath
of office to Supreme Court Justice David Baker in a public ceremony in
the supreme court courtroom in the Judicial Branch Building, 1111 E.
Court Ave., Des Moines. Justice Baker, 53, will fill the vacancy that
resulted from the retirement of Justice Jerry Larson.
Prior to his appointment to the supreme court, Justice Baker was on the
Iowa Court of Appeals and a district court judge in the Sixth Judicial
District. Before becoming a judge, he practiced law in Cedar Rapids for
26 years.
Justice Baker was born in Muscatine and raised in Waterloo. He
attended the University of Iowa where he received his bachelor of arts
degree in sociology, with honors, in 1975. He received his law
degree in 1979 from the University of Iowa Law School, with honors and
Order of the Coif.
Baker served on numerous committees of the Iowa State Bar Association
and the Linn County Bar Association. He served on the Board of
Governors for the Sixth Judicial District, as Chairman of the Amicus
Curiae Committee for the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association and as a member
of the Merit Selection Panel for U.S. Magistrate for the Northern
District of Iowa.
Justice Baker and his wife, Janet, live in Cedar Rapids and have two
daughters.
