Lansing Prepares for Celebrations
Posted 21 June 2008
The Lansing City Council, in regular session earlier this week, discussed plans for the upcoming July 4 and Fish Days celebrations to be held in the city.

Members of the council approved a beer permit for a music festival to be held July 4. The event, organized by Council Member and owner of the Other Place Jeff Bechtel, will be held at the Sports Complex on Friday, July 4, and will feature four bands and a fireworks display.

The Council also approved the use of the southwest portion of the sports complex for overnight camping following the July 4 music festival. Those planning on camping will need to fill out a form at the City Clerk's office and agree to certain rules - no glass bottles, no excessive noise, no parking on the grass and only above-ground, contained fires will be permitted.

The Council also discussed preparations for Fish Days, which will be held the weekend of August 8-10, by approving requests from the Fish Days Committee. Street closures for that weekend will include:

• John Street from South Front Street to South 2nd Street, not including either intersection - 10 a.m. Friday, August 8 - Sunday, August 10.

• 200 Block of South 4th St. from Dodge Street to Bridge - 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday, August 9 for Soapbox Derby.

• North Front Street from Main to Henry and the intersections of North Front Street and William, Hale, Ballou and Henry Streets - Saturday, August 9, 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. for live music and fireworks show.

• Main Street from Oak Hill Road to intersection of 2nd St. - Sunday, August 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. for the parade.

Other requests from the Fish Days Committee include general preparations of the Festival Grounds, additional dumpsters, portable toilets and additional police patrols.

In other business, the Council discussed a request for the City to take over the swim team following the retirement of Bob Honeywell, who coached the team, unpaid, for 20 years. Members expressed their appreciation for Honeywell's service and hired Jacob Galema to coach the swim team at a rate of eight dollars per hour.
