Road
to Recovery Program Training June 30 at VMH
Posted 23 June 2008
Veterans Memorial Hospital, along with the American Cancer Society,
will be holding the Road to Recovery Volunteer Training on Monday, June
30, in the Large Conference Room located on the lower level of the
hospital. This program will serve as a re-certification for the
current Road to Recovery volunteers, and appropriate training for
anyone who wishes to become a Road to Recovery volunteer for the first
time.
The Road to Recovery Program is a service offered by the American
Cancer Society in which volunteer drivers provide cancer patients rides
to and from their appointments. Drivers donate their time and the use
of their personal vehicle to help ensure that cancer patients get the
treatments they need.
Road to Recovery volunteer driving requires no special skills or
education - just a safe driving record, a valid drivers license, some
free time, a vehicle in good working condition, and the desire to help.
This volunteer opportunity is designed to be an easy and stress-free
service for both patients and volunteers. Simple training sessions are
provided to those who volunteer their time. The American Cancer Society
maintains specific standards for the responsibilities of these drivers
and provides the screening and training of them.
This is an important service because many patients need daily or weekly
treatments over a period of months and may not feel well enough to
drive themselves. Family and friends may be able to help, but there are
many times when they are not and this service will fill those gaps.
Road to Recovery is the very essence of the American Cancer Society
mission – people helping people overcome cancer. Road to Recovery
volunteers provide an essential service because even the greatest
medical advance is useless if patients can’t get to treatment.
The American Cancer Society works within your schedule, you tell them
what times are best for you, whether it is once a month or more
frequently that you could be available.
