Postville
Citizens Concerned Over New Plant Hires
Posted 25 June 2008
A number of concerned citizens addressed the Postville City Council
this week regarding recent problems the Postville Police have been
dealing with concerning new Agriprocessor employees in the community.
Over 300 former employees at the local meat packing plant were arrested
last month in the nation's largest immigration raid. The arrests left
numerous job openings at the Postville plant.
In the meantime, company officials have begun to hire new employees. A
representative from Agriprocessors told members of the Postville City
Council that the company will be exercising its right to administer
drug testing and background checks on new hires at the kosher meat
packing plant.
In other business, the council was informed that this Friday, June 27,
Saint Bridget's Church will hold a peaceful demonstration in the
community concerning immigration reform.
Members of the council set July 14 as the date for a public hearing on
the city's proposed garbage rate increase. The increase will average
about $7 per container.
Phyllis White was re-appointed to the Library Board.
