Funding
Soon Available to Provide Jobs
Posted 27 June 2008
Fern Rissman of Upper Explorerland told members of the Allamakee County
Board of Supervisors earlier this week that grant funds will soon be
available to provide employment for workers displaced by recent
flooding and that many workers could be put to work in flood clean-up
efforts.
Rissman was present at the board's Monday meeting, June 23, to renew a
lease agreement with the county for office space within the courthouse,
which members of the board sis approve.
Also at that meeting, Allamakee Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP)
Coordinator Barb Winters and ASAP Youth Coordinator Dawn Gomez provided
supervisors with the specifics of an agreement to retain Gomez, who had
been offered a position with Helping Services.
Beginning July 1, Gomez's position will become a full-time salaried
position at a rate of $35,000 per year , approximately a 20% increase
in her current salary.
Gomez will also be considered a co-department head with Winters.
Winters said that Gomez's bilingual abilities make her an asset, not
just to ASAP, but to other Allamakee County departments as well.
Members of the Board of Supervisors agreed that Gomez has proven to be
valuable to the county and agreed with Winters' efforts to retain her
as an employee.
In other business, Lori Hesse reported the promotion of Nicole Smedsrud
from Clerk to Second Deputy, effective July 1. The Board also approved
contract renewals for Veterans Affairs counselors and approved property
tax exemptions for homesteads at 72% and 100% exemptions for military
and elderly.
