No-Till Field Day July 1 Near West Union

Dan Burkhart, Fayette County Extension Education Director, and Jerry Muff, Fayette District Conservationist, announce that the 2008 No-Till Advantage Field Day will be held on the Collin Jensen farm northwest of West Union on Tuesday, July 1. 

An Iowa Learning Farm Field Day will be held in conjunction with this event. The field day begins with a demonstration of the Iowa Learning Farm Conservation System’s Portable Rainfall Simulator at 11 a.m. and will conclude at 3:30 p.m.

A free lunch provided by the Iowa Learning Farm Project and the Fayette County Soil and Water District will be served at noon.
 
Collin Jensen has used no-till farming systems for over 20 years.  Collin will have his no-till planter on display and be available to answer questions. 

Speakers include Brian Lang, Iowa State University Extension Agronomist; Collin Jensen and other Iowa Learning Farm Cooperators; John Lundvall, Iowa Learning Farm Field Coordinator; Mahdi Al-Kaisi, ISU Extension Soil Management/Environment Specialist; Jamie Benning, ISU Research Assistant in soil management; and Andy Herringshaw, ISU Graduate Research Assistant in sustainable ag/economics.

Attendees will view and have a chance to view and discuss:
•             The Iowa Learning Farm Portable Rainfall Simulator demonstration
•             how no-till systems can improve your bottom line
•             how no-till lowers energy and labor costs
•             how no-till farming systems keep soil in place and improve water quality
•             the economics of no-till versus tillage systems
•             twenty  plus years of no-till continuous corn and how the heavy residue is handled
•             crop disease relationships in no-till versus tillage systems
•             crop update and “hot and wet” topics
•             soil quality response in no-till systems
 
There is no charge for this event.  Sponsors are Iowa State University Extension - Fayette County, the Fayette County Soil & Water Conservation District, and the Iowa Learning Farm Project. 
 
The Field Day is located approximately three miles northwest of West Union at the junction of 250th Street and Muskrat Road.

 From West Union, go north on Highway 150  1/2 mile to 240th Street; turn left on 240th and go 2 miles to Muskrat Road: go right on Muskrat Road one mile. From Calmar, take Highway 150 until you get south of Eldorado; turn right on Nature Road; turn left on M Avenue and go ½ mile to 250th Street; turn right and proceed one mile to the Field Day site.
