Volunteers Ready to Transport Patients
Posted 5 July 2008
Veterans Memorial Hospital Road to Recovery volunteers recently attended a retraining with the American Cancer Society on Monday, June 30.  These volunteers are now available to assist cancer patients with transportation to their chemotherapy and radiation treatments that are performed outside of Veterans Memorial Hospital.

The Road to Recovery Program is a service offered by the American Cancer Society in which volunteer drivers provide cancer patients rides to and from their appointments. Drivers donate their time and the use of their personal vehicle to help ensure that cancer patients get the treatments they need.

This is an important service because many patients need daily or weekly treatments over a period of months and may not feel well enough to drive themselves.  Family and friends may be able to help, but there are many times when they are not and this service will fill those gaps.

Road to Recovery is the very essence of the American Cancer Society mission – people helping people overcome cancer. Road to Recovery volunteers provide an essential service because even the greatest medical advance is useless if patients can’t get to treatment.

Cancer patients may call Becky Welper, RN, Chemotherapy Coordinator at Veterans Memorial Hospital at 568-3411, to set up a driver.  Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer Road to Recovery driver may also contact Becky at the number above.
