3rd Annual WAVA Conference Set for March 5
Posted 18 February 2010
Women involved in agriculture are invited to attend the annual Women Adding Value to Agriculture Conference, or WAVA.  Entering its third year, the conference will be a one-day event held at the Hotel Winneshiek on March 5.

“Diamonds in the Rough” is Plain Jane Green’s theme as the luncheon speaker this year.  Prairie daughter, cattle sorter, dog lover, and author, Jane Green of Clark, SD, relates her misadventures of being a South Dakota farm wife, mother, and grandmother.  She has divided her time between teaching high school students, raising four rowdy kids of her own, and trying to help her husband Jim with their farm.  Some of her stories are real doozies and will bring you a laugh or a smile.

Jane currently writes for three newspapers, The Cattle Business Weekly, The Farm Forum and the Western Ag Reporter.  A major influence on Jane’s life has been the encouragement, which she received from the distinguished author Frederick Manfred, to write her stories and publish them. Each of her stories speaks to Manfred’s mentoring and her love of the prairie life.  Her books are titled, Plain Jane’s Misadventures, Volumes I and II.

The entertainment act for the evening meal will be The Farmer’s Daughters who will delight participants with light-hearted songs and stories of growing up on a farm in Iowa.

In addition to the featured speakers, six break-out sessions will be offered focusing on topics like tax planning, talking to the kids in tough times, making healthy choices, estate planning, insurance issues, farm programs and landscaping.

The entire conference program and registration information is available online at www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee or from your Iowa State University Extension office.  Early bird registration is $40 and due February 24.

WAVA is for women involved in agriculture, whether they manage their own farm operation, are impacted by the farm economy, or just want to learn more about today’s cutting edge agricultural topics.  The conference is funded in part by USDA Farm Service Agency, Iowa State University Extension, Northeast Iowa Community College and the Northeast Iowa Food & Fitness Initiative.
