“In-Step
with VMH” Begins March 17—Join Now to Take Charge of Your Health!
Posted 1 March
2010
The community wellness program, “In Step with VMH” will begin on
Wednesday, March 17, and run for eight weeks, ending on May 12, during
National Hospital Week. “In Step with VMH” is a free wellness
program covering many areas of personal health, helping those who wish
to take charge of their health by making good wellness changes in their
life and keeping them a habit.
“In Step with VMH” offers five options in promoting a “healthy
lifestyle.” Teams of four count not only the number of times they
exercise each week of the eight week program, but points are also
tallied for eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per
day, flossing teeth, drinking recommended amounts of water, eating
breakfast, and buckling-up whenever in a vehicle. A team will
consist of exactly 4 members including the captain. Points are
accumulated and submitted to Veterans Memorial Hospital on a weekly
basis.
All teams may participate in the program on-line by registering at
www.veteransmemorialhospital.com or team packets are available at the
hospital and at the Waukon Wellness Center. This is the
18th annual community wellness challenge sponsored by Veterans Memorial
Hospital.
During “In-Step with VMH” team members are encouraged to set reasonable
weight loss or maintenance goals of no more than 1 pound per week, or
they may wish to take the “non-weight” approach, and just set a goal of
fitting comfortably into their favorite pair of jeans. Whatever the
goal, all participants are highly encouraged to keep their goals small
because a small weight loss kept off for years is much more beneficial
than a large weight loss that is regained again upon completion of the
program. Fad diets are never recommended and usually result in an even
heavier weight following the diet because they decrease metabolism. By
following closely the “In Step with VMH” program, a healthy weight
should follow.
Information packets are now being sent out to businesses and churches
in Allamakee and northern Clayton counties, as well as past “In Step”
teams. Again this year, all 5th grade classes in the hospital’s
service area were invited to participate in the program to learn these
healthy habits at a young age.
Packets are also available at the Veterans Memorial Hospital and the
Waukon Wellness Center main information desks. Again, teams may now
register and participate on line by going to the hospital’s website at www.veteransmemorialhospital.com.
There is no charge to participate in this program. This is a
complimentary wellness program that Veterans Memorial Hospital provides
to its entire service area each year.

Director, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, at (563) 568-3411.
