New at the 2010 Iowa State Fair
Posted 12 August 2010
The Iowa State Fair will offer a range of exciting new programming and activities to the “Non Stop Fun” starting tomorrow, August 12 through August 22. New foods, competitions and ag education join time-honored Fair traditions in 2010.

Competition
The much anticipated Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center debuts at the 2010 Fair. This state-of-the-art multi-use facility seats 3,500 and will house the horse shows during the Fair as well as special activities on tomorrow’s Opening Day. Exterior walls are adorned with tiled quilt patterns from each of Iowa’s 99 counties.

Fifty-three new divisions in the Foods Department will feature a dizzying array of new concoctions, including Rockin’ Rhubarb for Kidz (August 16 at 2:30 p.m.), Indian Summer Applesauce (August 15 at 3 p.m) and The Impossible Recipe (August 13 at 12:30 p.m.). The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the recently-renovated Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.

The livestock competition line-up is expanding to include two new competitions. Miniature llamas will be judged alongside the other llama divisions in the Outdoor Arena at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 21, and Sunday, August 22. To qualify as miniature, llamas must be no taller than 38”. Keeping with new tiny traditions, the Lightest Pigeon Contest will join the Heaviest Pigeon Contest, with judging taking place on Monday, August 16 at 6 p.m. in the Pigeon/Poultry/Rabbit Building.

Youth will have the opportunity to test their ability to think on their feet in two exciting new competitions in the 4-H Exhibits Building. The 4-H Robotics Challenge (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 15) challenges teams to design a fully-functioning robot in a race against the clock. A demonstration in the Challenge Field will follow the competition, which features both junior and senior divisions. In addition, three-member youth teams will compete in a four-part competition that will test their culinary knowledge in the first ever 4-H Cook This! Challenge (10 a.m. on August 17, 18 and 19). The teams with the best ability to demonstrate their knowledge of kitchen equipment, produce identification and creativity in food preparation will be victorious in this battle.

Food:
Looking for a new food to satisfy your sweet tooth at the 2010 Fair? Look no further! Chocolate-covered tiramisu, a turtle mousse bar and the strawberry cream bar make their Fair debut on-a-stick from Oasis Concessions located at the Southwest side of the Livestock Pavilion. Fyfe Concessions will also introduce the Frozen Twinkie Log, its newest sinfully sweet treat on-a-stick at its stand in front of the Grandstand. The four treats join more than 50 foods on-a-stick offered at the Fair.

The Fair Square, making its debut on-a-stick, is the official treat of the Iowa State Fair. This irresistible snack is a tasty balance of sweet and crunchy with crispy rice cereal and mouthwatering made-from-scratch marshmallow. It’s only $2 and all proceeds benefit the Blue Ribbon Foundation to improve the Fairgrounds. Stop by the Fair Square booth located at the northwest corner of the Administration Building to try one of these crunchy palate-pleasers.

The Fair also has a new food stand featuring kid-friendly foods. The Chicken Coop will offer a new food on-a-stick, the Octodog (hotdogs in the shape of an octopus), as well as mac & cheese and crustless PB & J shaped as farm animals. The stand will be located north of the Animal Learning Center.

Those looking to recreate the best of the fair food competition entries can pick up a copy of the latest edition of the Iowa State Fair Cookbook, which features prize-winning recipes from the 2008 and 2009 competitions. The can be picked up during the Fair at the Elwell Family Food Center and all Blue Ribbon Foundation booths.

Educational Opportunities
The new Grape Getaway invites young Fairgoers to learn about Iowa’s “growing” grape industry while participating in grape-themed activities and enjoying interactive displays and trivia. Located north of Grandfather’s Barn, special activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, with the new Kid’s Grape Stomp highlighting each day’s grape-related activities. This is a must-see, one-of-a-kind experience for kids of all ages.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Iowa State Fair Vet Camp over the past two years, the 2010 Fair is proud to feature an advanced program, scheduled to take place in the Penningroth Media Center. The new Advanced Vet Camp will cover basic surgery, advanced pet wellness and animal reproduction and is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 14, 3 p.m. on Monday, August 16 and noon on Sunday, August 22. Registration is full.

Blue Ribbon Kids is back in 2010 with seven new events scheduled every weekday at 2 p.m. in the Kids’ Club tent on Expo Hill. In addition to “Non Stop Fun” for youngsters, Blue Ribbon Kids has expanded to include Team ISF, an interactive Fair program for youth age 11-14 and the Iowa State Fair Street Team for ages 15-18. Both programs require pre-registrations and more information can be found online at iowastatefair.org.

Joining the lineup of Fair demonstrations, the all new Angora Wool spinning demonstration provides an exciting educational opportunity for all Fairgoers. The demonstration will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, August 22, in the Pigeon/Poultry/Rabbit Building.

The Ralph H. Deets Historical Museum will display twenty new panel exhibits for the first time during the 2010 Fair. These additions will join the existing historical records, artifacts, trophies and photos from over 15 decades of Fair history and will be on display from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Fair Favorites Celebrating Major Milestones at the 2010 Fair
Time-honored traditions help to make the Iowa State Fair an annual excursion for over one million guests. Two Fair favorites will celebrate several years of success at the Fair in 2010. Started in 1925, the Fiddlers’ Contest celebrates 85 years of musicianship on Pioneer Hall’s stage. The first fiddlers’ contest drew more than 100 entrants and continues to be a popular contest at the Fair. Today’s contestants must play three selections by ear or memory: a hoedown, a waltz and a tune of their choice. Age group divisions are held August 13-15 at 10 a.m. with the championship August 15 at 3 p.m.

The Two-Cylinder Club Display will take to the Grand Concourse for the 20th year on Wednesday, August 18. Tractor enthusiasts from across the Midwest have been enjoying the display of antique tractors and farming equipment since its debut in 1990.

This is the Iowa State Fair’s 125th year in its current East Des Moines location. Although the Fair moved to Des Moines in 1879, it wasn’t until 1886 when the first Fair was held two miles east of the State Capitol. Iowa was the second state in the region to acquire a permanent home for its fair.

The Iowa State Fair is set for “Non Stop Fun” August 12-22, 2010. For more information, call 800/545-FAIR or visit iowastatefair.org.
